Question
why would anyone even bother with a small business during a recession?
I don't know a lot about business, but I was just wondering what lead people to believe they're going to be successful.. The example I'm going to use is some family opened a pool hall last December down the street from me. Then they closed this past August. I was just wondering how long would it take to get a lease or rent on a place like that and maybe they planned ahead before times were less rough. My town needed a pool hall like it needs a hole in the head. Now me and my family were boggled because we knew it wasn't going to last. Just kind of a "what were they thinking?" kinda thing. I do feel bad they didn't succeed, but people have to be smarter than that. and what kind of business WOULD be successful in a small town? Small town as in, biggest thing we have = McDonalds & Rite Aid a pool hall is just a room with pool tables that charges you money to use their tables for a certain amount of time. and moneyman. you are missing the point. I'm not criticizing the people you moron. I'm just wondering why they did this when no one in our town is going to spend money to play pool when they're mostly senior citizens. and making 100k a year makes you special? keep living in that world.

People start small businesses because they have to start somewhere and there is always money to be made. Sure its a lot more difficult in a recession, but if your starting out you have an advantage over businesses that are half bankrupt People think they are going to be successful normally because they believe they have a good idea. Even though you say your town didn't need a pool hall (im not even sure what that is) probably the main reason the business failed was that the idea the family had was poorly implemented. In a small town you cant run large businesses because they require lots of cutomers. For this reason large businesses often overlook small towns. Accordingly, there is money to be made in offering such services as hardware stores, supermarkets and convenience stores. Also, whats a Rite Aid?

It's the best time to start a business. There's more opportunity when things fall apart than when everything is running smoothly. Many small businesses fail regardless of when they're started. Sometimes it takes getting fired or layed-off to get the motivation to start something. There's no bad time to try when you have nothing to lose.

It like any type of business whether large, small, home or online. If you can find a niche that's not be satisfied by other businesses, go for it after doing sufficient research to ensure its viable
