Question
UK prepaid credit or debit card for foreigners?
I am not a UK resident and I don't have a UK address - I live in Italy, in fact. Are you aware of a way to get a UK prepaid credit or debit card? PS: I need it to withdraw small sums in Pounds - a few hundred per year - from PayPal to use when I come to the UK, without having to pay high currency conversion rates twice. I am looking for a simple, legal solution (not looking for weird offshore investments) Thanks

Western Union do a pre-paid US$ or £ card or, next time you are in the UK, drop into the the Post Office; they do two different pre-paid cards.

I think you may be able to apply for either Caxtonfx or Fairfx prepaid card. Take a look at www.tracenotes.com. You may find your answer there.

The "bad news" for you is that UK prepaid cards are only available to UK residents. However, sounds like a prepaid card would not be your best bet. If you simply use your current account in Italy and transfer funds from your PayPal account, then use your debit card when in the UK; yes, you will have to take the hit on the exchange rate twice (although bare in mind that the exchage rate offered by your bank when you use an ATM will be very very competitive). However, if you're talking a few hundred pounds this will almost certainly be cheaper than having to the high fees associated with having a prepaid card (eg annual fee, loading fee, transaction fee etc). You can find details of prepaid card fees here; www ... under "more details". And as an added bonus, the solution is dead simple!
