Question
landlords responsibility to fix lawn or mine?
- hoping i have posted this in the right category - we recently (2 months ago) moved into a unit which has a lawn. the grass was half dead when we moved in, covered in weeds and large patches of dirt with no trace or grass. is it our responsibility to fix this or our landlords (since it was like this when we moved in)? there is also no tap outside to attach a hose to water it so i dont see how they expect us to take care of it, and with summer just around the corner i am expecting it to die completely. we have been taking care of the hedges which is not a problem, we just dont see why we should be paying rent for a lawn we cant use. any advise would be really helpful we are living in Australia I dont see why you have to be so abusive about it. Im not complaining about the situation, i was simply just asking whose responsibility it is to maintain it when they leave us with no tap to water the grass. Im sorry you found this simple question so distressing, and felt the need to abuse us as tenants.

That is something you should have asked when you moved in. If there is nothing in the lease agreement about provided lawn care then it is your responsibility.

The lawn was like that when you looked at the place right? Why are you complaining now? It didn't occur to you that maybe you should ask about it when you previewed the property? Sounds like the landlord could give a rats behind about a green lawn or nice landscaping, and to be honest, landscaping is not typically something the landlord has to provide. You want nice grass to sit on or look at, go buy a bag of seed. It isn't expensive. If you don't want to do that, just put down a few bags of small pebbles so you don't have to water anything. Just don't expect the landlord to jump in there with a bag of seed. Also, you have to water grass seed 2 to 3 times a day until it germinates and then once a day after that until it takes root...then you have to mow it when it gets about 3" high. Do you have a mower? Or are you expecting the landlord to come over and do that too?
