Question
How to get a freeloading family member out of the house?
I just moved in with my cousin and his brother has been living with him for a year and a half. He has yet to pay rent. There is always some excuse...."I don't make enough at work, blah, blah, blah"....He doesn't contribute at all around the house without a verbal fight. Aside of giving a him a deadline or putting his shit outside and changing the locks, is there anything that can be done?

legally, if you throw him out without a 30 day notice or by just changing the locks, thats breaking the law and he can sue YOU for unlawful eviction. if you want to do this the legal way you need to go to court to get an eviction notice. you have to treat this with the same landlord/tenant laws your state upholds for apartment complexes etc

Give the freeloader written 5 days notice to vacate - and go to court and file for an eviction. Legally, you can't change the locks and move his things out even though he's not paying anything - you have to wait for the court to evict, then have the sheriff "remove him". Good luck,

It all depends who is on the lease. You need to have a written agreement with your cousin. If his brother is not on the lease or paying rent, I think your cousin has to be the one to kick him out.

Assuming (I know never assume!) that the freeloader's brother is the owner and has been letting his brother crash, If this is true, there is no legal either can take unless Mr. Freeloader signed a written agreement to pay a certain amount each month towards the household. This young man needs to either contribute as an adult member of the household or adhere to a deadline (30 days works in most cases) given by his brother to get out. Also, freeloaders stick around because the getting is good. Unhook the cable by a certain time each evening. Any public computers and the land line too. Give him access to the staples and keep any treats/favorites in your rooms. Good luck, family can be a handful!

"you moved in with your cousin" - doesn't sound like it's any of your business if you moved into someone else's house/apt - especially if the brother (also your cousin) ha been there 18 months- you have no right to say anything to anyone - you don't like it - move out

Your cousin is the person who should have posted this question, not you. If there is no rental agreement, and his brother is not an owner of title, and he has not paid any rent, then he is a guest in the house. He can be forced out by mailing him a notice to move within a number of days. If he is not out, put his stuff in a nearby storage locker under his name, pay the first months rent, and give him the key.
