Question

I am going to call the building inspectors...?

I live in an apartment building, and the landlords refuse to do maintenance. I have a window that lets draft into my bedroom and in the winters here in Ontario, that is not fun. I informed them that the temperature drops below the legal limit, so they know I know the law, what I don/t understand is why wouldn't they fix it? they don't care if I call the building inspectors? so, I am planning to call the building inspectors, and I believe they will force them to fix it. However, I am worried about retaliation from the landlords in for of harassment( not performing further maintenance, entering the unit without permission, or even try to evict me...) Any one has a similar experience, and how did they handle it? thx all for ur help

go buy a plastic window insulating kit for $5 and fix it yourself...If you turn in the landlord they will retaliate, probably with eviction.

Fixing the old drafty window would likely require a brand new window and a qualified contractor to install it. Apparently, they do not want to incur that expense. You already know you can go two different routes. You could submit requests in writing via certified mail for proof of documentation and state a deadline you want it fixed by. If there is no response, you could hire someone to replace the window yourself and deduct the cost from rent. You have to check your renter's rights in your state as to deducting rent for self-made repairs, but in most cases, you are allowed to do that if the landlord does not respond to your requests. Or, you could call the building inspector. I don't know if they would take a drafty window very seriously, though. Or, you could avoid all the hassle and the possible retaliation by attempting to put a band-aid on the problem. Weatherstripping and plastic film are very cheap, and will probably do a lot for your drafty window. I guess the route you take depends on your personal preference and what's easier for you to tolerate.
