department stores
Question
is anyone a manager in retail and actually liking it?
Does anyone have career in retail and actually like it? I'm just curious because I am working a retail job right now at Best Buy. And from my point of view, I have a hard time understanding why the managers don't get a job somewhere else. They typically pull around 70 hour weeks, have to come in at all kinds of hours, and they only get like one 30 minute lunch break despite working at least 14 hour days. I don't know how much they get paid, but I would say it is probably no more than 55k/year. So I'm just curious, is there anyone here who can give me any more insight as to why someone would work this? I'm asking because recently my store manager told me he would like me to consider an offer to become a department manager.

No, you have it completely nailed down. Managers put up with the stress for that $60K per year. Retail employees make maybe a third of that amount per year. I worked in major grocery stores for decades - and to be honest, some managers just couldn't handle it - but as I was typing that thought, I remember there were a few who COULD handle it and remain friendly every day and all. Most get stressed. So, take a step back and evaluate yourself. If you become a dep't manager, well, you can bet your phone will be a-ringing when an employee calls in sick and someone (you) needs to cover their shift. This will happen a lot - and you WILL get tired of it, believe me. Go for it - but when you are off work, turn off both your land-line phone and cell phone.
