April 2008
Question
I received my tax refund today? I'm confused....why did I get it?
A check for a good amount of money came to me from the Michigan government. I did file taxes for 2008 but that was before April 2009 (you know, the April 15 deadline). I haven't even started on the 2009 year of taxes. There was NO letter with this check...just a check attached to a paper with the treasurer's signature and my social security number and important stuff that the government only has access to. When do people get tax refunds? I don't understand. This is my first time.

So the check was for the 2008 year? There was probably a glitch somewhere along the lines. You're prob that small percentage that gets it late with a particular amount added, but maybe you should call and make sure, they might even ask for it back later, who knows. Just be sure and call.

My guess is that when you did your Michigan taxes, you forgot to take a deduction or exemption that you had coming to you. Most states run your information through their computer to verify your calculations, and sometimes they find something in your favor but it takes awhile. That happened to me once.
