Question
Does Allstate really call your old insurence company and help you say goodbye?
I saw an Allstate commercial that said they'll call out old insurance company and help say goodbye, and like breaking up is hard to do, with the black guy talking, with a prom going on in the background. Do they really do this? What would they say?

I assume that they send a form letter by mail telling your old insurance company to cancel your policy there. I do not think that they really call on the telephone and have an emotional conversation.

They do notify the other insurance company of your new coverage and the other insurance company will refund the amount for the period of time that there would be overlapping coverage. Whether it's an actual phone call, a database entry on a computer or a letter, I don't know.

No. No insurance company can call and cancel your policy for you. You have to do that yourself. No one is authorized to act on your behalf. It is not true.

By calling an agent you will get assistance with cancelling your old policy. The agent can have you sign a form that they can fax to your old company to cancel the policy.

Many agents do this as a courtesy to the old agent and client - they notify the old insurer that the policy has been taken over. Usually it's a letter, though. I've typed thousands of them. They go like this: Please be advised Joe Smith has chosen our agency to provide auto insurance coverage for his family for the coming year. Joe thanks you for your past service, and is making the change due to a personal relationship/convenience/lower premium cost. Please forward any return premiums directly to him. Thanks in advance, and please feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns.
