Question

Now or January? Which is the best month to incorporate?

I will be starting/opening a business in March / April 2010. Should I wait until January 2010 or should I start the incorporation process now? This will be my first business.

If you plan on having a December 31 fiscal year-end, then incorporate after the 1st of the year. That way, you won't have to file a short-period return for 2009 (and possibly pay some minimal state taxes)

January. If your business is a consumer driven type of business, any holiday season would not benefit your business.

There is no reason to incorporate now if you haven't started the business yet. It takes a couple weeks at the most to file papers and so forth. Why do you want to incorporate? For most small businesses, it is an unnecessary expense and the money would be better used elsewhere. You can operate as a sole proprietorship - your taxes will be much easier to do and the costs of starting up would be lower.

if you open it it january it will be good and bad because it will be a new year and everyone will be spending so you can get money but will have a lot of competition so it just really depend on when that business is on top throughout the year and another good thiing in january is that is around the time people get their income tax and will have money to spend
