right to privacy
Question
Can I move my housing assocation flat into a newer housing assocation flat?
I moved out of a private let into a 1 bedroom housing association flat last month after waiting 16 years on the waiting list. After I moved in I am experiencing problems such as: - noisy neighbours in stair - other neighbours visitors pressing my buzzer though the night to get access to stair - neighbours door in front of me just been gratified - extremely bad sound insulation. I can hear my neighbours talking word for word at normal level. This makes me uncomfortable as they can hear me word for word so I don't like to have TV on or take telephone calls in the house. I can't even have visitors. There is just simply no privacy. I guess that is what you get living in a 100 year old + building. This is the thing that worries me most. I just spent the best part of £700 on new carpets, decorating etc but I feel that I can't live here long term so don't even mind losing all that. I know that the same H.A. are building new 1 bedroom flats 10 mins walk from here. Do you think they would put me on a waiting list to transfer into a 1 bedroom there? I really would prefer new as there would be less decorating to do and at least there would be some sort of sound insulation in the walls. Do housing associations allow people to move to the same sized properties. I guess I really don't know how to go about it all and if they will even let me. And advice gratefully received. Thanks.

hi Aaron, Yes, Housing Associations allow transfers between properties of the same size. You can also transfer to another 1 bed property either with somebody who's with the same HA, another HA or a Council. Keep in mind that transfers are at the discretion of the landlord (HA or Council). The only way to find out if they'll allow you to transfer is to ask them. They might refuse, but they might give the go ahead. Talk to your housing officer about the problems you are experiencing and they may be able to do something about it. All the best - Duncan

go to your housing office and tell them you want to go on the transfer list or you can go on the exchange list but you have to go to the local council to do that do tell housing that you are experiencing problems as there quite strict on nuisance neighbours and noise good luck im in a housing association property they are pretty good solving problems
