Question

just rented new apartment, landlord sent a notice of rent increase instead of lease?

I just rented a new apartment and my landlord told me she would send me a lease by mail within a few days, i did receive in the mail from her a notice of rent increase rather than an official lease, is it ok to sign it as a lease or should i ask for a real lease, as this is my first apartment im not sure what to do in this case but just thought this was odd, any help appreciated thanks!! im in new jersey btw! Just to clarify the rent amount on the notice of rent increase is the correct amount agreed upon for the lease. and it has been 26 days since we actually moved in at this point

Do not sign that, ask for a real lease.

pleased detail the exact number of days between when you agreed with landlord and when she mailed the notice of rent increase. if it is less than 30 ... i'd suggest refusing it and suing in small claims. looks to me like she's trying to scam you into paying more than agreed. *** what you should get is a lease at the agred amount per month for at least the minimum period she offers leases for. WITHOUT the rent increase. lesson: receive, sign, and return lease BEFORE you move in. It's the honest and businesslike way.

You should be asking your landlord this question. You should have a real lease.
