Question
Starting a small business. Help and advice please.?
My son wants to open his own window fitting business. Is there a package which would outline all he needs to do to keep it all legal. He would like advice but doesn't have the funds to pay anyone at the moment. All advice welcome. Thank you all in advance, (hopefully ;))

He needs an Accountant - with little business knowledge an Accountant is essential and will save him more than the fee.

you can get bussiness plans on eBay for less than a tenner, would that be too much for him?

form a small ltd co that way if or when he goes bust his personal assets cannot be touched for any business debt, cost from £20 to £50, secure any financial input to the company with a debenture lodged at companies house £20, then if it goes turtle he resigns as director and walks away from it, and he gets paid in full before the tax, vat or any other creditors,

Your son, would be better of speaking with an accountant - if you do a little research on the internet you may be able to find an accountant who will meet free of charge with you for up to an hour. I know SS Bookkeeping & Accountancy Services (www.ssbookkeeping.co.uk) offers this service kind of service and also offer business plan documents.

If he is in the UK he can get plenty free advice from the job centres business advisors and Business Gateway He first needs to write up a business plan, which basically sets out his plans for his business, his customers, his stock and fittings, his overheads, his marketing costs and don't forget he needs to be aware of the competitors Have a look at Business Gateway's website for starters

Your local Business Link gives free information on advice on starting in business. They run a free one day seminar on the subject and once you're serious about starting your business they allocate you an advisor who helps with business planning and marketing. Check their website for your nearest branch. I wish your son well.
