I've worked for eBay for nearly 10 years. This is a scam, don't do it. Period... If you follow through with this, you'll lose the money he sent and lose your item too. PayPal and eBay has some insurance for sellers, but it doesn't cover you if you deliberately ignore eBay's advice and policies to sell this item off of eBay immediately. Don't do it... it's 100% scam.

You should always wait until the payment is made before sending the item. However, ending the auction early like that is suspicious, and probably a scam. Ebay asks that you report users who try to buy things outside of the auction process.

Your scammer is planning to do one of two things: (Most likely) he will send you a FAKE email claiming that he's paid Paypal and that the money is in escrow until you can prove you've shipped the item. The FAKE email is from him. It can be quite slick as the scammers work months on making them look good. The scammer hopes you don't know that Paypal doesn't work this way, that the money would be visibile in your account. The scammer hopes you send the item then wonder why you never get the money. Let me guess, the son is in Nigeria or some other African country. (Less likely), he does pay, but uses a stolen credit card. You ship to the foreign address--which is not the address on the account. The account owner sees the $640 charge and protests it. Paypal reverses the charge. (Paypal will NOT back you up if you send to any other address, even if you get a signature.) You are out the item, the shipping, the money you thought you were making and a $10 processing fee. Craiglist is for LOCAL transactions.
