What compensation should I expect from my bank when their error ruined my holiday?
The expiry date on my debit card was a month earlier than the date printed on the card. I never received the new card that they had apparently sent several weeks before. I was left without access to my account for 3 weeks and had to rely on family to bail me out with what funds they could spare. The bank appear to have agreed to compensate me and I wondered whether it was reasonable to ask them for substantial compensation. I was on a cruise ship at the time, where you have to register a valid debit/credit card. The system used on board ship is cashless and money is taken against your registered card card at the end of the trip. No card = no onboard spending. I also planned to use my card (to spend with)and to take currency out if I needed it.

I agree with the person who said you would be lucky to get $100 out of them. Next time, use American Express as a backup. They will actually overnight you a replacement credit card via FedEx. Also, if you have a membership with AAA auto club, they offer you American Express traveler cheques with no fee, unlike banks. Take the money you think you will use out ahead of time, then get travelers cheques (yes, that is the way they spell checks). I have always used them on vacations and never had them refused, even at gas stations in the middle of nowhere. Keep your cheques numbers (they give you a list of them) noted as you use them and in a separate place from where the actual travelers cheques are kept. If you lose the remaining cheques, American Express will also replace them immediately. Pretty good was to ensure this never happens to you again.
