Question
If you sell fine art photography, do you need to register as a business?
I do abstract photography and want to set up my own website. I am not interested in for-hire work. I just want to have a place to point people to at galleries, etc. where they can see more of my work or order prints of something they like. For this kind of limited business, do I need to register as a business, copyright a "Jane Smith Photography" name or get a federal tax number? Or do I just need a domain name and that's it?

I assume you will be operating in a "business-like" manner and are in this to make money. If you are operating as a sole proprietor with no employees then you don't need a tax ID number. You just file your taxes under your social security number. If you set up a corporation, or hire employees, you need to apply for an employer identification number (EIN). Search for EIN at irs.gov. You should contact your local county clerk's office or a local business attorney for any advice regarding local requirements for new businesses (e.g. filing an assumed name, copyrights etc.)
