Question
Insurance for an automotive repair shop?
I am a mechanic and I am thinking about starting my own repair shop. I'm tired of working for somebody else. I have good credit and some liquid capital saved. I was wondering what the cost of insurance would be for this venture. What types do I need? I know I will need it for accidents to customer's vehicles as well as some kind of liability for injury. Does anyone out there own their own shop? Anyone work in insurance? I don't want to start searching for quotes yet because I don't want to deal with the phone calls from salespeople yet.

It's just easier to get a quote from a business insurer and take it from there. Here you get a number of quotes from local insurers: www ... When you get your own place you better get used to deal with salespeople as they'll be a permanent feature of your office, both in person and on the phone. In a way they'll help even if at the beginning if won't be obvious how.

I ran my own bike repair place, including import/export which meant an office overseas which turned into a full repair place bigger than my original own one..

You're talking about a Garage policy - it can include coverage for building, tools, garage liability, and customer vehicles. Assuming you're a one guy shop, with one bay, it's going to cost around $2500, if you limit customer car coverage to $10,000, on a legal liability ONLY.
