Question
Consumer Credit reports on job application?
I applied to work in JCPenny and Sears and at the end of the application they asked for my permission to view my consumer report. If i didn't check the box to give them the permission they automatically void the application. So does this mean that if my credit history is messed up i cant get a job? If so how am i to fix it if they don't give me a chance to even work to pay it off?! hmm thats sad... my credit was messed up because i didnt finish paying my student loan but while i did work with my prior employer i never stole ( the vault was right there) i made deposits in the bank and everything but when i had a risky pregnancy and couldnt work any longer, so i couldnt go on with the payments, oh well screw sallie mae funds cuz i can't pay them back.

Nothing is automatic but it's not really a matter of score, what they are looking for is derogatory things like collections, judgments, bankruptcy's, repossessions, tax liens, child support, charge offs, late payments etc. How a person handles their personal finances is a direct reflection of how employers can expect them to handle their jobs. I don't agree with this practice, but considering the amount of money that companies spend training new employees it's understandable that they use this to weed out people that may not be worth their investment.

Nothing is automatic, but it gives them a pretty good picture about how responsible you are. Also, employees with money issues are MUCH more likely to steal from their employers.

Sorry, that's how the ball bounces! - Those companies must see your records before they can hire you. You will be handling their money and stock - if you have credit problems you may be tempted to steal. Try to apply for employment that doesn't ask for credit information.

That doesn't automatically mean they won't hire you. It's also not their obligation to hire you so you can fix your credit. If you can't find work at Sears or JCPenny then apply elsewhere and don't restrict yourself to retail. In this economy, and if you think you're not an ideal hire, then you can't be too picky. If you still have your student loan then contact your lender and see what options you have. Just because you had a risky pregnancy is no excuse to just let it go and miss payments. As soon as you know you're going to have trouble making payments it's your obligation to follow through. Sorry, the ball is and always was in your court.

NOT ALL employees with money issues are likely to steal from their employers. in fact, i have a good friend with money issues & she doesn't steal from her employer. in fact, she was recently voted #1 in her dept. employees with money issues CAN B honest & NOT steal from their employers.
