How to find the closest places available for rent, given an address?

ok,so craigslist is a website which deals citywise. I was thinking if there is a better way to find a place for rent/home when one has an address for the work. For example,I am gonna work in Tasman street in San Jose.Now if i look up the whole san jose, i have to find places,call for exact address and then feed in mapquest/google to get the exact distance to decide if its close or not. I was wondering if there is a website where we can feed a specific address or atleast the street name with city name close to our school/work (any place close to which we wanna live), and it gives us the available places nearby. Its very easy but one has to be good in programming and find out the street names if not exact addresses,feed in a database and then make a search engine.
