Question
Would I be entitled to a Community Care Grant or Budgeting Loan?
I was signing on for JSA up until 3rd September when I got a part time job. I am contracted to do 8hrs a week. I need to get a cooker, freezer fridge sofa and bed etc but cannot afford to buy this on my PT wages. Also am I entitled to JSA still?

Whether you still qualify for JSA will depend on how much you earn, you can work up to 16 hours a week and still claim but they deduct any money you make from your wages away fro the amount they pay to you in JSA minus the first £5. If your working 8 hours a week on minimum wage you'd be entitled to about £20.00 a week JSA if your over 25 or about £5 a week if your under 25. If your wage is higher then minimum wage you probably wouldn't receive any money from JSA. Community care grants are only available to those people who are leaving or just left supported accommodation, such as a foster home or hostel. Budgeting loans are available to those who are currently receiving and have been receiving either JSA or income support for at least 26 consecutive weeks. So because you have signed off the 26 weeks would start again from the time you claimed again so i'm afriad you'd be entitled to neither. There are charities around though that provide these kinds of items for really cheap prices or you may find a charity such as the salvation army who will provide the basic furniture for free. Check with your local CAB or shelter and see whats available in your area. Also check places like gumtree or the free ads, there are usually people giving these large bulky items away for free to anybody who can collect them.

You need to go to the Citizens' Advice Bureau who will help you with finding all the right information and sometimes are able to act on your behalf.

Spring is right in the part that you can earn £20 per week and still get JSA, anything more than that will be deducted from your JSA, as for the Community care grant it is very hard to get money for that and you can only claim for a cooker - several years ago when I was on JSA and subletting I was offered a council flat and I had nothing, I applied for Community care grant and got the money for a cooker - it is very hard to get it and they usually give half of what you ask for so obviously ask for a high amount, there is a section that asks why - you must sound convincing, if you just put i don't have a cooker and need one you wont get it, it must be a convincing story, mine was all about that now I have my council flat and no furniture or cooker etc I need a cooker to enable me to start building my life together again and make a better future for myself and hopefully find employment. I had to get fridge, freezer, bed sofa, etc all second hand - now I have a great job and fantastic wages - you might get a budgeting loan but you have to pay that back,. Good luck
