SEO question related to keywords?

my domain name currently is searchable only by typing in the url. how can I make the two words used in a phrase instead of "my-site.com" be searchable as "my site"??? since most people would put it in the search engine with a space between the two words? is this done with meta tags, or done through google somehow?

If your website's url is my-site.com your main keywords are "my site". The reason why your website appears when someone searches for "my-site.com" and does not appear when searched for "my site" is because of the higher competitivity of the latter keyword. Nevertheless this can be improved. First you need to include your main keyword "my site" in your title and headlines. Next, it must be also included throughout the text but with no more density than 5%. You should also add your keyword in pictures alt tags and it would help if you could bold and/or italicize your keyword throughout the text. Also you must not have any dead links on your website. Now, the most importing factor that will boost your rankings is generating many quality backlinks to your website. Backlinks should use your main keyword as an anchor text.

There are two factors to consider when optimizing your website and pages. On-page SEO and Off-page SEO. On-page SEO focuses on building your website to a "search engine standard" such as including <title> tags in your HTML, <h1> tags, image <alt> tags, how easy it is to nagivate through your site, whether or not you have a sitemap, disclaimer, terms of use, privacy policy etc, and how you link to other pages within your website and to other websites. Off-page SEO focuses entirely on how other websites point to you. If for example your site was about "vintage car restoration" and say 100 other sites linked to your site with a hyperlink text "vintage car restoration" do you think Google and the search engines would think your site is about "vintage car restoration".. you bet :) This is why off-page SEO is far more important and is what you should be focusing on more when your site is more-or-less complete. If you want proof, type "click here" in Google and see what results you'll get. Adobe comes up first because of the number of website that link to Adobe Acrobat reader under the hyperlink "click here". Now that you know that the in-bound links from other websites are important, how do you get more links to your website is the main concern. We do this by submitting content to other popular websites, such as videso to YouTube that link back to your website, articles to article directories like EzineArticles, press-releases to sites like PRWeb, a blog post to WordPress Blogs, submitting our site to the site directory listings such as Dmoz and much more.. Not only do you gain traffic from these sites themselves but the search engines will 'see' that your site is important the more links that are pointing to it. And that is the 'trick' that the majority of high-earners are doing on the internet. I hope this answers your question and everyone else's and sheds some light on getting traffic to your website!
