Question
Does my Property Manager legally have to provide me with the Landlord's contact info if requested?
Long story short, I am rather tired of dealing with our property manager. As much as she is a nice lady and likes us very much as tenants, I feel that she cuts corners when dealing with drug problems in our complex. I do not like living above potheads, plain and simple and there are some matters that I know would be much better discussed with a fellow businessman, the owner of the property. So my question is, if I ask my property manager for the owner's phone number, does she have to provide it, or can it remain confidential? How can I go about contacting the actual owner? Thanks!!

property managers are technically your landlord per the lease and for all legal matters. (i am one) but if you go on the public records department for your county you can find the name of the property owner and more than likely a way to contact them. however if this is a drug problem that probably will do you no good. I would try the police and file complaints there. so no they do not have to provide and if you contact the owner chances are you will end up with an angry owner and an angry property manager since the pm represents the owners wishes. more than likely the pm wants the junkies out too but is bound to the owners wishes. good luck but police seriously

The property manger doesn't have to give it to you. You can go to the court house and find out, it is public record. If the home is owned by a corporation of sort it may be more difficult. If the property owner is aware of the illegal activity and does nothing about it he can loose the house. I own a couple of rentals and manage my own properties, I like to know when my tenants have issue so I can work at resolving them as quick as possible.

In some state the law requires that the owners name be posted somewhere on the property. In most states, no...you are not entitled to such info.

Tom- The reason the owner hires a property manager is so the owner does NOT have to deal with phone calls from tenants. I would be furious if one of my tenants got ahold of me and would simply refer them back to my property manager. Because you are right there, you are the best one to notify police when you see things that indicate drug usage. Unless the property manager or owner actually witnesses this, they have no reason to call police - you do! Then and only then, with a police report in hand, does the property manager have any ammunition to get rid of these folks.

The most important thing is to get evidence, such as photos, video, etc., of the crimes being committed. If the police won't respond, send the evidence to your local news media, and a copy to your district attorney.
