I will have to assume that since you "paid" off the debts then you must have filed a chapter 13 (reorganization) which means a payment schedule is established to make payments within a specified time frame. Chapter 7 is for discharging of debts by liquidation of assets. In either case, under § 605. Requirements relating to information contained in consumer reports [15 U.S.C. §1681c] reads as follows; (1) Cases under title 11 [United States Code] or under the Bankruptcy Act that, from the date of entry of the order for relief or the date of adjudication, as the case may be, antedate the report by more than 10 years. (see source). In short it can be up to 10 years depending upon which chapter you filed. NOTE: States have nothing to do with the reporting period in a credit report. It falls under the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). The only time a states statutes would affect reporting on credit reports is in regards to "Judgments" only. Hope this helps answer your question. I'm not sure that I understand you. "Bankrupt" is a legal term that means "released from obligation to repay (unsecured, non-tax, non-student loan) debts". If you were truly "made bankrupt", then it does not make a lot of sense when you say "i paid the debt in full". Although people do sometimes file for bankruptcy, receive a discharge or release of their obligations to repay debt and then voluntarily choose to repay some of the debts (usually to friends and family), it doesn't make sense that you would "[pay] the debt" that caused you to be "made bankrupt". You should explain what you mean when you use the terms "made bankrupt" and "paid the debt". Were there other debts that you did not pay? Short answer: the bankruptcy, if you received a discharge or release, will be on your record for 10 years if you live in California. I'm not sure how long it will be on your record if you do not live in California. If you truly "paid the debt", and that was your only debt, and you did this before receiving your discharge, then it is possible that the negative comment on your credit report will be removed or amended. Some creditors will fail to remove the negative comment such as "charged off". Run your credit report by going to "www.annualcreditreport.com". It is a free service. Don't go to "www.freecreditreport.com". That service charges you a monthly "maintenance fee". After running your credit report, go to google and type in "how to fix negative marks on your credit report. Find a website that walks you thru the process and follow the instructions there.
