Question

i have no idea how to run a business, let alone a small family business?

My hubby is based in S'pore & his elder brother, who is a shareholder of the company, is based in California. The company has been in S'pore market for 16 years. My hubby is older than me by 18 years and I shall foresee a day, when I have to take over the running of the business, should he pass on. But I have no idea how to go about managing, running, or upkeeping a business. Currently, I'm helping out in the admin/ bookkeeping side, with him running the main show, from logistics, manpower, scheduling, servicing/troubleshooting, sales to accounts. How do I carry on from where i am? What courses or skills should i take up? I don't want to wait until the day he breath his last, to worry about the next step i should take. Any experienced kind souls willing to give some sound advice, it's with much appreciation from my side.

If I understood correctly he is your husband. So just ask about it and talk about it with him. He would be more than happy to help you. The best way to learn about business is to deal with it upfront and in real life. Classroom doesn't get you that far, real world experience is what counts. I am part of a family business too and just being part of it and asking questions is all that really matters. Hopefully you can logic things out and understand why things were chosen in what way and if anything, what went wrong and how can that not happen again. Everyone makes mistakes, as long as you carefully thought things through you should be fine. Just ask him that you've become more interested in what he does about managing and whatever and just ask specific questions that can broaden out and you should be fine.
