I am assuming you are just curious or thinking this would be a "cool" business to be in. If not, say hi to your teacher for me. Anyway, movie theaters are a tough business to make money in these days. For example, when a blockbuster movie has a full house, the theater owner must make a lot of money, right? WRONG. The first week a movie plays (when most people go to it) the theater owner gets about 50 cents per ticket sold! They have to make their money on concessions. For a small entrepreneur trying to open a single screen theater, it's almost impossible to make money showing first run movies. You would be competing against the 36-screen multiplexes. Some small theaters show "art movies" and have special events to make a go of it. On the plus side, a well managed multiplex can be profitable - the key is managing it well, picking the right movies and controlling costs. Threats come from all over - TV, DVDs, sporting events, live plays - they are all competition for people's leisure time and budget. That's why theaters are showing more and more 3-D movies - it is an experience that you can't get at home.
