management team
Question
what to do about a bad management team?
I work at an office as an assistant manager. My GM and office manager are related. I was hesitant in taking the job for just this reason, due to prior experiences with similar issues. My office manager is fairly young (24) coming into work late, leaving early, not getting her tasks done due to hangovers, lack of focus due to personal phone calls and or isues, and all around having a bad ego power trip. Everyone complains to me about her, but I have nobody to tell this to since everything falls on deaf ears due to , what? family relations? I'm by no means a perfect manager and have many short-comings I can pin point, but it seems out of control and we've have good employees quit because the stress level is so high. Example; she left early one day because she wanted to have time to get ready to go to the horse races with a friend, last week it was an over-load of laundry she had. She couldn't do it the weekend before because she was "too busy planning her Halloween party." NOT any employees problem, but now it is and I don't know what to do since we've created an out of office friendship...PLEASE HELP ME!!!! How or WHO do I talk to?

There really is nothing you can do in that situation. From what you described, the office manager is young, incompetent, acts immature and she is is related to the GM. The GM will most likely not get rid of her. Many businesses actually go downhill because of this situation. I would recommend finding another job but this economy is absolutely awful. Absolutely nobody is hiring right now. I would say that you should just bite your tongue and tough it out. But don't expect the situation to get any better because it won't. You'll just have to tough it out until the economy improves. I wish I could give better advice but there really aren't any options in this type of situation.

1 never mix business with pleasure but since you've already created a 'friendship' you ought to talk to her about the problems she's creating, or jokingly give her a hard time when she's got other things to do...but if you're taking part in these party plannings or drinking the night before, you've put yourself in a tough spot. Let her know "hey we've got work to do" and sort of be an example for her to learn by.
