Question
I cannot see people who work at retail stores bargaining prices with people. Can you?
They say that you can walk into a store and talk down prices. I just can't see places such as Wal-Mart, Target, or other chain retail stores doing this. I can't see stores at the mall doing this. Buying a car? Sure. I know they will. But the every month shopping? Back to school supplies and clothes? I have my doubts. Please, share your thoughts. I don't envision big chain stores ever doing this - it would take an enormous amount of training employees and managing the process for it to work, which would more than eat up any extra profits the store made. The exceptions might be appliances (like Sears) and high end electronics (Best Buy, perhaps) - but the amount of bargaining would be very small and the consumer would probably have to prove they could get it for less elsewhere.

The only way to find out is to ask. The worst they can do is say no. And whatever you do, DON'T buy into the whole, "well, we can give you a discount if you sugn up for our credit card" stupidity.

Brian is right. You have nothing to lose if you ask. I worked in a large jewellery store as a salesman before. I can tell you that you are foolish not to bargain. Jewellery has very high mark up. You can easily knock down the price by 25 to 30%. Some expensive watches like Rado, Omega, and Rolex, you can easily get 20 to 30% off if you ask. Give it a try if you do not believe me.

MANAGEMENT would have to approve any haggling and big chain stores are just not going to do that - they have enough sales - maybe Mom and Pop stores
