Question

can i claim housing benefit?

I was a student who recnelty lost his place at uni since i did not perform well. I am thus no longer getting a student loan and i have tired to find a part time job whihc is proving to be difficult. I have applied for JSA which i have got. Now atm i am going to find it difficult to pay my rent for my flat. I live with 2 of my friends and we each pay 300 a month for the house. We each have one private room and a toilet and kitchen which we share. I am thinking of applying for a housing benefit as well until i can get a part time job. Do you think i will get it. I atm do ot have enough money to pay for the coming months rent. thanks

Yes you should be entitled to the maximum amount of housing benefit because you are on JSA, how much that is will depend on your age and where you live. If your under 25 the council will only pay towards a house share or bedsit which is fine as it's already where you live but generally this is usually no more then about £65 a week. So though they will pay the full £65 a week you will still need to find the other £40 a month to pay your full rent. You will also receive full council tax benefit as your no longer a student your no longer exempt. Bare in mind though, it takes between 6-8 weeks for your local council to process your claim and make the first payment so you need to do so quickly and make sure you provide everyhting they ask you to asap.
