How do search engines differ?

We all know there are several search engines: AltaVista, Ask, Google, Yahoo!, etc. In an independent way, if possible, can anybody explain to me what the major differences are between them? I'm not looking for detailed technical differences. Just wondering in what situations I would use one rather than another, or are they all pretty much the same?
