QUESTIONS 1. How do you account for the reluctance of competitors to imitate the successful efforts of another firm in their industry? Under what circumstances is imitation likely to be embraced? 2. To date, McDonald’s has shunned diversification into unrelated food retailing operations as well as nonfood options. Discuss the desirability of such diversification efforts. 3. “Eventually—and this may come sooner than most think—there will no longer be any choice locations anywhere in the world for new hamburger outlets. As a McDonald’s stockholder, I’m getting worried.” Discuss. 5. what do you think is McDonald's near term and long term potential? what makes you think this?

1. Imitation usually eats from your market share. In instances where imitating competition serves for your promotional efforts, then it may be good. In Mc Donald's case, they are almost the generic brand for fast food and hamburgers, so all efforts of competition to promote hamburgers also help McDonald's 2. I think there is no desirability in their case. They focus on their core business. 3. I am not sure that is true to start with. But assuming that it is, they may have to find growth strategies based on increasing sale per location. This might end up having some sort of diversification as you have asked in Q2 though. 4. They have already started to initiate "healthy" choices or reducing the transfat type of changes. I think they might repackage themselves in a format that they would be equal to "healthy fast food" location one day. At least that is how trend is going anyway.
