Question
Apartment sound proof?
I recently moved into a new apartment that is pretty much right off the street and public transportation ( both train and bus station are steps away from my apartment), however, i neglected asking how the sound proof was before i signed the lease, and seeing that i am a light sleeper and the extremely cheap windows ( that let in massive air now that its getting really cold on the east coast) i can hear not only the train and buses, but also cars, people talking, and sadly i can even hear when a skater skating on skateboard going by my apartment, thats how cheap those windows are. I go to bed late and wake up early with ear plugs on all the time, this living condition has been effecting my everyday life, i also get headaches here and there due to the noise and sleepless nights. i was wondering besides doing the sound proof work myself, are there anything i can ask the agency/landlord to do? also, is it illegal to have these cheap windows? my last landlord was pretty much a fraud i am still working on the case with a lawyer, that has changed my view about landlords and agencies in boston, that all they want to do is take advantages of students with deposits and cheap apartments. thank you so much for your help!

Brandon - Spend some money and install some heavy window coverings - you can get some that are almost like quilts that would keep out the cold as well. Also run a fan or a humidifier in your bedroom at night for "white noise". Ask the neighbors what they have done to alleviate the noise. No, it's certainly not illegal for a landlord to have cheap windows!

you are the perfect candidate for sub letting; more specifically, for getting a replacement tenant YOURSELF and you become the new tenant's LL during the remainder of the lease.

Mass is needed. Consider building window plugs. Make them heavy, like from OSB or plywood. Heavy curtains might help, but they're likely not heavy enough.
