Question
Are there places to council you on fixing and repairing your credit that are non profit ?
I would like to sit with someone and have them review my credit reports and give me advice on how to improve my credit score. I went to a credit counseling place and they just wanted money. Would like to buy a home soon. Is there anywhere I can go ?

Every place will want money, even a nonprofit expects a donation. That is their job. You can fix your own credit. Get your free credit report annualcreditreport ... Get a book on debt and credit repair at your libary or bookstore. Get your reports totally free from annualcreditrepair.com Get a book - become smart - get your dream house. You can do all this yourself with a good book. If you have outstanding credit card balances - pay them off. Carrying balances destroys your credit scores. Use your card wisely. Charge a little something and pay it in full when the bill comes in. /

Unfortunately most businesses that promise to fix and repair your credit are going to want money and most are pure scam. Here's some good info from the FTC on credit repair: www ... If you are planning to buy a home, you need to settle any derogatory items showing on your credit report. Mortgage lenders will insist these all be resolved before approving a mortgage. You can negotiate settlements for old debt -- the older the debt, the smaller the settlement. Be sure to get any settlement agreement in writing and do not give the collector access to your bank account. Best thing you can do to improve your score is first, pay off all current credit card balances -- it will help your score and your debt to income ratio. Second, pay all your bills on time. You need at least a 24 month history of consistent, on time payment to improve your score. Also, you need a 20% downpayment and closing costs to buy a house.
