A real estate agent in YOUR area would know if any programs are available. These programs are to help you get a better interest rate. They do not cover downpayments or closing costs. The prorgrams that did "gift" downpayments have been shut down. They were not legally gifts--just ways to get around mortgage rules and the government decided this was borderline fraud.

Not legitimate. The only deal out there now is the $8K tax credit - but it expires 11/30/09.

If there are any of these anymore, they are extremely local. You may have to purchase in an undesirable neighborhood or you may have to agree to pay back the "down payment assistance" if you sell within a certain number of years or if you make any profit at all from the sale. I always found them to be very restrictive and a royal pain to work with. My attitude now is that if you need that much help, you probably should put off buying a home until you are more financially stable and you don't have to jump through anyone else's hoops just to get a few thousand dollars. It's not worth the hassle!
