It depends on the kind of patent you want to apply for. I guess average is around $500. You can do your own search, but if you want to actually patent something then the U.S. Patent Office must do its own search to make sure your item is unique. That's the search that costs $500-ish. You're asking a lot of questions about patenting, trademarking or copyrighting your invention. How about just reading about it at the patent office? You'll get more accurate information there than on Y!A. www ... You also might want to place your questions more carefully. This has nothing to do with Search Engine Optimization. SEO is about how to develop your own website so that it is search engine friendly and to improve your own site's rankings in search engine results. It's not about how to search for information but how to make your own information be found.

Yes, you can do it yourself. Just as you can cut your own hair and build your own house. The only problem is, what are the consequences of relying on a poor search. Based on the other questions you have asked, the reason you want to do a search is to see if its worth spending the money to file a patent application, so, if you do your own search or only pay enough for a quick search, you might waste 10,000. On the other hand, its not worth spending 10,000 to find out if you would waste 10,000. So, go to www ... and do your own search. But search like you want to find it, not like you have to search, but don't really want to find it (which is what most inventors do). Don't stop after you try seeing eye dog and dont find your invention. Also try vision impaired and animal assistant and any other way to broadly describe your actual invention you can thing of..... not just mouse trap.... also try rodent inconveniencer.....

It can be anywhere from $400-$2,000. And even a $2,000 is not a guarantee that it will unearth all the prior art. Yes you can do your own patent search through google patents and through the USPTO website.
