Question

Solid work history, clean criminal record but low credit score. How will this affect my background check?

I have over 20 years of management experience in banking and collections. I have recently applied for a job with an attorney's office and need to be bonded. My background check will all be good except my credit score. I have gone through a divorce and have medical bills. I have 3 large charge offs from the divorce from 2002. They are still active because they keep selling the debt. Recently my husband and I have fallen behind on car notes that is why I'm seeking employment. I really want this job and don't want my past credit to hurt me. I have past 2 other background checks in the last 4 yrs. My concern is being bonded. Do employers look at the entire picture or can just one thing affect the job. They have already offered me the position so now it's up to the background check. Nothing on my credit report shows my strong work ethic or morals. I'm really worried.

It depends on what they think of your character and how upfront you've been with them. Attorneys run background checks because they have huge problems with employees stealing from them; if an employee steals money from a client of the firm, the attorney can lose his or her license. If you were upfront that you have some financial issues and your record is otherwise clean, it shouldn't be an issue. However, if they are learning ugly information for the first time, it may hurt you. Either way though, if they do offer you the job but put up some security restrictions, please don't take it too personally. Would you risk your financial future on a stranger with the financial background you have?

Unfortunately it does effect you on the job search. I think that is so unfair it seems like nowadays you are turned down for a job before you are even given a fair chance. And alot of experts say that credit history doesn't even predict if a person will steal or not. But you do have a right to know whats on your report and if you are turned down for a job because of your credit. Hope this helps.

They look at credit to give them an actual on your charactor. I f you have charge offs you should pay the original debtor or it likes like you said oh well!!! If you at least pay your past bills in full that will be on your credit report as paid.I know its hard -Its like this how canyou pay your bills on time when you cant get work because of the credit its a vicious circle. I had alot of credit card debt once i took a job at craker barrell waitressing i made 100-150 a night and always worked sundays( the busy day there and I paid everything off in one tear plus i worked all day in a doctors office but i wanted that monkey off my shoulders now i can sleep at night you have to pay that old debt it will come back to haunt you i promise you that . good luck!!
