Question
Giving out your Social Sec # when getting insurance quotes?
This seems to be a little less of a case, but still insurance company's agents ask for or prefers that you give them your social sec #. Some say they need it to give an accurate quote, but even then they WILL raise your rate once you become their customer. The golden rule of thumb is the only party who need your Social Sec # is your employer. Do you give out your Social Sec # when shopping for auto or homeowners or renters insurance? Even giving out last 4 digits can make your vulnerable if it falls to the wrong hand. MSAD: I'm withholding information by not surrendering my social sec # to some desperate insurance sales agent who MUST make sales to make a living? If you provided some info as to how the insurance companies are LEGALLY BOUND to protect clients' or potential clients' personal info, then that would have been a better answer. Of course, the insurance sales agent doesn't have to give me a quote. I'll just go to another agent and YOU LOSE MY BUSINESS.

It depends on your state. In CA rates are not based on credit scores and your social security number should not be asked for. Your social security number would be asked for if you take a homeowners or renters insurance but not just for a quote. And, with auto insurance you would not need to give your social security number for a quote or the application. You might want to post your state.

Your credit rating is often a factor in insurance rating. With out your SSN the insurance agent can't give you an accurate quote. They can get you a quote, but it would not reflect your risk. Rates can change after the policy is issued because it goes through underwriting. Here they can pull your MVR and CLUE reports. Prior claims, accidents, tickets etc are usually found here and your rate adjusted to reflect your actual risk. But if you are upfront with your agent about these things the quote will be very close to the rate you get. Every insurance policy I've gotten has been right in the area of the quote. If your actual rate is jumping up substantially from the quote...odds are, you are with holding information from your agent that prevents an accurate quote. Now....are you asking a question or just preaching?

Yep, they do that to do the credit check. Rates are based on credit checks, along with motor vehicle records. If you don't give your social, then they won't give you a quote. Period. You don't HAVE to give your social. They don't HAVE to give you a quote. That's how it works.

Without your SS#, there is no way an agent with any company worth their salt will be able to give you a fully accurate quote. There are a few states left that don't allow this and even less companies that won't ask for it. Tons of research has gone into this and statistics prove that credit history is an accurate indicator of the likelihood of you making a claim. Those who are highly indebted or have a history of not paying their bills tend to make more claims. Period. If you call my office and ask for a quote and refuse to give me your social's, your DL#, the names of all driver's and their social's and DL#'s you are wasting my time and yours.
