Unsafe conditions? Can I force my landlord to replace my stove?
I live in a low-income building, and with the fact that it is low income, the loandlord tends to let repairs go. I have been ahving a problem with my stove. The burners randomly heat up,even when the knobs are off. Today, I had to go out and came back to find my apartmetn billowing with black smoke, because I had left a pot with leftover pastra o the stove. The smoke dectors did not go off, even though you could see the smoke in the windows from outside. All the knobs were in the off position!!! Since I had reported this issue before I told my landlord, that's it, I want a new stove! And moreover, I need working smoke detectors! I have children! He said he would be happy to replace the stove, and that the cost will be tacked onto my rent. I think that is crap. Can he do that? Can I report him somewhere! because its been "repaired" twice and it keeps happening.

He is morally obligated, not legally. You can sue for smoke damage or the right to terminate your lease. Put all future requests in writing, and have it notarized. The landlord will get the message.

Why don't you buy a $15 power strip, plug the stove into that, and turn it off when not in use. Why don't you ask about getting it REPAIRED instead of replaced? No, I don' tbelieve he can charge you for a new stove. Ask him if you get to take it with you when you move?

There is no law that requires him to provide you with a stove,so he is within his right to make you pay for it ,if he pays for it up front. He has to provide working smoke detectors upon your move in however,you can be charged for batteries after that or you can change them yourself.Most likely the smoke detectors only need new batteries and it would be quicker to get them yourself. But as for the stove,you can either pay him or you can pay someone else because you cannot make him provide you with a stove.
