Question

Does this buyer seem legitimate?

I am trying to sell my guitar on an online classified website, and have a potential buyer. However, I am noticing some things that simply seem a little shady in regards of how he wants to handle the transaction. Supposedly, he will send me a check with the amount I listed the item for, plus extra money in order to pay for his "private shipping company" to come to my residence, pick up and deliver the item. I have never heard of this before, and thus am nervous about giving him my mailing information. On top of it, his email included "i want you to go and end the auction for me i would end it by my self but i don't know how to do it if you can do that for me i will add $10 to your payment"... I'm not sure why he would ask that unless it was a scam and needed to cover his trail... plus his English wasn't very good in the email, not huge deal, but i felt it was noteworthy. What do you think? Should I continue the transaction?

Do not deal further with this scammer. Make sure that you only accept cash for any sales. Do not accept any check; even a cashiers check. Banks must cash any cashiers check on the spot, but it takes them 2 weeks to discover a counterfeit. You will cash the scammer's check and "pay" the shipping company. The guitar will be gone. In 2 weeks you will get a call from your bank. A policeman will be waiting at the bank.... wanting to know if you were part of the scam.

It sounds very fishy to me. Tell him you will arrange the shipping with the company of YOUR choice and that the auction will end when you have the EXACT amount of money in hand: the cost of the guitar plus shipping, no more, no less.

It's a scam. We get e-mails from people wanting to order goods. They give the quantity they want, ask for a price, say that they'll send their private shipping company to collect etc. End the correspondence on this one and proceed no further with the sale.
