Question

Why do so many people buy condominiums?

Do people not realize that when you buy a condo, you're basically just buying air? You don't own any land, any part of the building, or anything tangible. You're just buying the space (or air) inside your unit, and you have to pay property taxes AND a monthly association fee. So basically, you're paying property taxes even though you don't really own any property. Hmmm.. Doesn't sound like a wise investment to me. I know people have said that they don't want to have to worry about lawn maintenance or snow removal, but the condo association fee is a lot more than you would pay to have someone cut your lawn every week.

Everyone has a different life style and has different needs. A condo does not meet my needs, and apparently not yours, but they are the perfect answer for plenty of other people.

much less upkeep. true, condo fees can get out of hand with small dictatorships running them. but it's a lot less hassle.

For some people it makes sense. You still build equity but don't have to deal with outside repairs, mowing, snowplowing, etc. Remember the condo fee covers painting, siding, roof repairs,paving...all of which are very expensive.

Jordan - You most definitely own property. Your legal description on a condo should read something like " Unit 12, Villas at Vistoso, and one one hundredth of the Villas at Vistoso". You as an owner own your portion of the total property. You need to be involved in the association to make the decisions that are best for the community; but most condo owners would rather just complain and not get involved. If it bothers you so, then you probably ought to purchase a single family home that has no homeowners association.

So what? If it suits their needs, that cube of air can be quite appropriate. And you're TOTALLY wrong. All the condo owners own an undivided share (fractional interest) in all the real estate, building, common areas, etc. And they are paying a fractional interest on those real estate taxes, and their monthly assessment is based on their share of building.

I know what you mean. I've been house hunting(since I'm sick and tired of renting) and I was curious to see what a condo was all about. I stepped foot in one and it felt like a apartment rental unit. I quickly walked out of there. If I wanted that same feeling, I would stay renting.
