Question

How to sell/ pitch a surprise item?

I need to attempt to sell a random item that comes from John Lewis as part of their interview, I was wondering if anyone can help me with what to say, which points to make or any one liners that will make me stand out from everyone else. Thank you

First think about the product you are given and it's main characteristics and then think how it will benefit the consumer and sell it on the basis of it's unique qualities, what it will do for them, why they NEED it and why there is no alternative. For example.. take a simple item like a pen.. sell it on the basis that it's not just "a pen" but a particular pen (whatever type that may be). How is it better than other pens? If it's fancy looking you could make points about how stylish it looks (and what it will do for the user's reputation..it looks professional/expensive and therefore will make the user seem professional and polished), or is it simple and cheap (cost-effective) and great because "it does the job" with no unnecessary frills. Is it very easy to write with, can you replace the ink in it and therefore it lasts ages and may be more cost effective than other pens. Given that you don't have endless time, don't mention qualities which are irrelevant to the consumer, for example when selling a ferrari it will be more effective to mention things like how fast the car is, how flash, status symbol (enhance their reputation, will make the person look rich, powerful..attractive to women if selling it to a man, etc). You are very unlikely to sell the car on the basis of the fact that the wheels are rubber and therefore the car won't be struck by lightening. (A person buying a ferrari..is probably not buying because it is "safe" and also all cars have rubber wheels.. so this doesn't set it apart from other products in the same market). You can also think about the consumer group you are selling to when making your pitch.. for e.g. if you are selling the ferrari to a young hot shot investment banker who's just got his bonus you will mention how cool and flash it will make him look, speed, it will attract loads of girls, it may be a particular ferrari of which there are only a few in the country so the car is sought-after and therefore even cooler etc). Or in your case - are your interviewers senior executives? (if yes, then assume they are interested in products which enhance their reputation, business, career, life style, etc). Think about what qualities the product has and what a consumer of that type of product would want from it and identify matches, then just really play up these qualities and emphasise what the consumer with get for their money. Tell them why they don't want to walk away without that product. I would definately avoid cheesy one liners because in all likelihood it will come across as a sleazy and cheap pitch.. kind of like one that a used car salesman would make.
