Question
Do you think my work is wrong or me?
This past year I graduated high school, right? My work knew I was in school and they always scheduled me 27-30 hrs. a week. In that week frame, I would always have to work Tuesdays and Fridays 4 p.m. - 12 a.m. and yet I never really complained and I always woke up at 7 a.m. the next day to get ready for school. I graduated this past June. For some reason, once I graduated, my work cut my hours even though I had more availability. It wasn't because of the economy; where I work, the company is actually doing quite well despite the economy. The same amount of people worked there and yet my hours got cut. Then, once summer was creeping to a close, I told them I was going to school full-time at the college. I gave them my schedule in advance and everything else. Yet, they scheduled me 30 hrs. for the same week I started my classes! I don't get it and it's so annoying! I told them that I'm taking 17 units and they schedule my all these crazy hours. I'm thankful for the hours I'm getting but it doesn't make sense when they could have done it when I wasn't doing anything for the whole summer duration but they give me hours when I go to school. Then, I realized that they scheduled me on Monday, the 7th, which was weird to me because I had school that day. Well, I realized that it was Labor Day! I was so pissed because I was excited that I would be off school, get to catch up on some homework, and sleep in. I guess they think since I'm not in school because it's a holiday I can just work even though I never work Monday's. I think it's rude. I told one of my managers that three days is tough as it is and anything more would be really hard on me. I'm an excellent worker and I always do my job but they try to milk me to death sometimes by relying on me too much when they don't even care to handle their other employees. It doesn't make sense to me. And I always work on every single holiday while people who've been there less time than me don't have to! I can see if you had seniority or something but this isn't even the case. I'm thankful to have a job but it seems like they're trying to ruin my life in a way. I told my manager I couldn't do Labor Day and she was fine with it but seemed sort of annoyed. I just don't she fully grasps the whole situation. Do you think I'm wrong? And I don't understand why they can't give my hours to somebody else who works on the same side as I do. They have the same availability as me and the managers know that they don't go to school or do anything besides work and yet they give me the hours. Confusing? Oh, and they weren't short staffed, either. There were four other people working in the same department as I would have been so they didn't need the extra bodies that much.

It does sound like they are trying to run you around. I think your best bet is to start looking for another job, one that is more willing to work around your school schedule. Besides it is a whole lot easier to get a job when you already have a job, funny how that works. But then at least you wouldn't get mad and quite without a back up, and if by some chance they fire you you would already have a job lined up. I think that if they are giving you this big of a hassle then something most be up. Maybe they think your a good worker and a nice guy so they can take advantage of you and you wont do anything about it. Start looking for another job and once you find one tell them you have another offer and are considering it because of the way they have been treating you, maybe then they will take you more seriously. Hope this helps and good luck.
