YES, do not do business with that mover. Especially if you found him on the Internet. The best way to figure out a fair price is if the cost of fuel is less than 25% of price the moving company offered to move you. Look at it this way. For the sake of argument diesel fuel is costing $3.00 (CDN) and a tractor trailer moving truck holds 300 gallons of fuel so to fill both tanks would cost $900. Now those big trucks get about 6 miles to the gallon so it is safe to assume that the truck would consume both tanks of fuel on the way out and on the way back. So it will cost the moving company $1800 just in fuel. That doesn't include the salaries of the workers doing the moving. That is another $1500 at least for just two men. That doesn't include other expenses involved in the move. What will most likely happen is that they will pick up your stuff sell the job to a small company after pocketing the down payment or all of the payment due and the small company will be looking for another $2000 to $3000. A fair price for that move would be around $6500 to $7000. Check to find out where exactly this moving company is located. Don't be surprised that it may not be a Canadian based operation.
