I started a business with a company like valpak but had no fee's for a direct mail magazine in my community.?

I paid the company almost 1800 and have the checks to prove it. I realize they did some art work for the magazine and will be happy to pay them. The kicker is the company has went under due to not paying loans back to there biggest suppliers. That supplier is now in receiver ship and has rights now over the company.. Ive tried contacting this company but they never respond to emails etc? My main issue is I paid for goods but didn't receive them. I want my 1000 back but how should I go about getting it? small claims? sue?
