Question

Do you find advertising banners irritating when surfing the web?

I run a website and have a biggish horizontal banner at the top and a square one on the right side bar. I am considering removing them for the benefit of visitors because they are not paying much at the moment. So... do you find banners online irritating or not?

Yes and no. I understand that to keep all the great content you can find on the web free of charge there needs to be ads. I think most people are ad blind these days anyways. When I go on a website I don't pay attention to the banners at all. Occasionally they will catch my eye, but not usually. Google Ads aren't as annoying. They seem to blend in better. I have clicked on more of those than on banners. You might want to check into changing the banners to Google Ads through AdSense. I don't think having a couple of banners on your site would cause people to leave or not visit your site. As long as they don't expand or aren't pop-ups (which I deplore) then you should be fine. You can always survey your readers. Set up a free account at Survey Monkey and place a link on your site asking visitors to take a short 5 question survey. If you don't think they will take the survey offer them a free report or something as an incentive. Good Luck.

I find it annoying when an advert suddenly expands and covers a link you're trying to click, so you end up applying for a loan or something when you were wanting to read an interesting news article. Yahoo can be bad for expanding adverts

If they are relevant to the topic of the site I don't find them irritating but maybe a large on at the top is abit excessive? Maybe ask you readers/customers, everyone likes to be asked their opinion 'Innocent' the drinks company have made a business out of getting feedback from their customers!
