Question
How much does it usually cost to build a web site from scratch?
I'm not a professional programmer or anything, but I know enough HTML and web design to make basic web pages. An acquaintance has asked me if I could make a web page for his local business, an office building cleaning service. Since he wants me to put in the time to make it a good, professional looking site to market his company, he wants me to bill him. I want to give him a price that beats what he could get from a professional service - that's the whole point of him coming to me with this - but is still fair for me. Any suggestions?

I build websites in my spare time. I charge a flat rate of $500 to build a site that would typically take me one evening. 4-5 hours. The customer has to buy the domain and hosting. I thought this was high but, I started getting tons of phone calls from local business owners. It turns out that 2 businesses in our small community charge $1500 to $2000 minimum, plus they ask for $30 a month to host. (I found out some of these sites were being hosted at hostgator on a $4.95 account!) Regardless, $500 works for me
