Question
How to find the name of the person I am trying to contact?
Hello I am trying to contact businesses (varying from restaurants to lawyers) and need to find the name of the correct person to talk to. Obviously I need to ring up/email the company, but how should I word what I want. I am after the person in charge of marketing the business/the manager. Is that the best term to use? Thanks if you can offer any kind of help Sophie

Business owners don't like people ringing up and asking for the names of people - trust me, I know this from personal experience. They also give their staff strict instructions not to give out names. Businesses exist to provide products and services to customers, not to be sold to. There are other ways of researching the names of the people you need to contact. Start with the company's website. There's often a lot of information in the About Us page. You can also buy lists from Thomson's that include the named contact for the business. If you're ringing companies to offer them products or services, make sure you comply with the TPS (Telephone Preference Service) rules. Many businesses register with this to avoid unsolicited sales calls. There's also directories for specific industries that give you the names of the people to contact. Law is one of them. Good luck!

It would help if I knew why...but something like this would do "Hi, my name's Ann Jones and I'm a student. I'm looking for the name and contact details of your marketing manager please." That does it normally. If you are not a student and you still need to approach the marketing manager...then say " Hi my name is Anna JOnes and I'd like to get the details of your marketing manager please." They'll give it to you no bother.
