Question

Where should we move?

We don't have to live near work, because we get our income from work we do online and work we do at home. We want to move to a place where we won't hate the weather, where our kids will be safe, and where we can buy reasonably nice real estate for a reasonably low price. We hate hot humid weather, and very cold windy weather. It's ok to be 25F without much wind, but it's not ok to have a bitter cold wind chill, such as 0F with 25MPH wind. We thought about Oregon, but the rain there happens at the wrong time. In the desert there doesn't seem to be enough rain for any nice plants to grow without irrigation. Near the ocean, the rain happens most when it's cold, which is the wrong time for rain. The long summer drought probably makes it hard to grow any nice plants without irrigation anywhere in the state, including right on the coast. California is out because of the high real estate prices, high taxes, and high crime rates. Hawaii is way too expensive. Florida is way too hot and humid. For the best real estate prices, we're considering parts of Pennsylvania, New York state, and Michigan. Where else should we consider, and what else should we take into account? We want to take the cost of electricity into account, but the only information we can find is by state, not by city. Does northern New York State have the same electric rates as New York City?

Here are the fbi statistics on crime that you can browse: www ... www ... Your weather requirements are kind of hard to help you with. If you live outside of the South (which is hot and humid) you are going to get rain when its cold which I believe you stated as the wrong time to get rain. For most of the world rain comes in the winter when it is cold. Even in places where snow is common, rain still comes when it is cold. New England does have a cold wind, it isn't Chicago, but there is still a wind chill. The coldest I have ever been was at Niagara Falls in upstate New York in April. Also places like Idaho and Montana have cold icy winds. Good places to raise a family: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Utah. Often Yahoo has articles about things like that, so you might want to search their database. Cheap Houses: Don't rule out California for that one, with recent housing crashes, people are desperate to get rid of foreclosed homes. Basically any places with high foreclosure rates you are going to have less expensive asking prices.

Vermont. It's a nice place to live. I know from experience! New Hampshire is nice, too. No sales tax, haha.

I hear there are some greally good deals to be found in Xanadu and Shangri-La. Seriously, though, your restriction that the real estate be reasonably priced rules out just about any place that has the perfect weather condtions you require. It's a supply and demand thing; everyone wants to live there so prices are inflated due to the demand. I understand that you don't really expect to find the perfect place for a really cheap price, and that you are really only looking to get close to those ideals. We were willing to put up with some short bad weather periods for all the other benefits from living here (cheap housing, good employment, cheap gas and food, great people). Won't tell you where that is, or we couldn't afford to live here soon. :) :) Good luck.
