I had a credit card while in college and defaulted cause I was a broke college kid... but it had been settled and paid off.Whats the best way to rebuild credit? I have a job now and can afford paying off a credit card

You don't say when the card went into default. If too recent, such as within the past two or three years, you will not get the loan. Longer than this and you might. As to how to improve your credit score, pay everything on time and do not have a large balance on your credit cards.

It really depends on how bad you credit score is. If it is good enough to get a traditional credit card, you could probably just apply for a card, get it, use it and pay it off each month. If your credit is so damaged that you can't get approved for an unsecured credit card, you may have to apply for a secured card. Under these agreements, you put up the money as a deposit (usually as little as $250 or $500). You are then issued a card with that credit line and can use it just like a regular card. If you choose to do that, you should call the bank you are considering just to make sure they report to the credit bureaus. If they don't you won't be building your credit. Be careful with secured cards as some carry high fees and interest charges. For some great choices, check out www.creditgumbo.com. We built the site to help people learn about credit bureaus and scores and also offer some of our favorite cards in different categories. Best of luck!
