Question
Did you ever think TAXES are great?
Have you ever though about the good aspects of taxes? Recently, a group of misguided individuals decided to re-create the Boston Tea Party. Apparently these people are dissatisfied with Obama's tax policy. Now, mind you, we (the middle class the bottom 95%) just received a tax cut. The protesters claim to be protesting the vast government spending. The government is spending massive amounts of money but it is necessary, in order to keep the United States economy out of another Republican Depression! This lesson was learned from the first great depression. So what these Teabaggers as they are called, are protesting, I do not understand. The irony in this is that the Boston Tea Party was actually in protest to a tax cut!! In the 1770's tea was very popular. The British East India company exported tea to the then colonies of North America. The British East India company was the most powerfull trans-national corporation in the world. The British government cut the East Indian's company taxes and they were able to provide tea at a reduced rate and they were going to under-cut the domestic merchants of tea. So the local's in the colonies protested by tossing the tea into the sea. In other words, the colonist were protesting the unfair domination by multi-national corporation of the industry. Today, these multi-national corporations are the ones organizing these "tea parties." In reality we need to be protesting the trans-national corporations and the very very wealthy. Also, the protester's in the 1770's were protesting taxation without representation which is a non-issue today because we all have our representatives in congress. Ronald Reagan raised our taxes but I didn't see these people protest then. Ronald Reagan typically receives credit for dropping taxes which he did for the top 5% ( drop the tax rate from 71% to 39%.) But for the rest of us in the middle class he doubled our Social Security Tax. Obama does plan to raise taxes but not on the middle class but rather on the top 5%. The protest was organized by such people as Newt Gingrich (FORMER Republican leader) which is known as a person who looks out for national corporations such as the oil companies and the very wealthy and Dick Armey, a known lobbyist. You see taxes are not our enemy. In fact taxes really don't matter at all to the middle class. If the taxes on the middle class increase then so will our wages. On the other hand if our taxes decrease so will our wages, because employers know what we are willing to work for. But taxes do matter to the top 5% because they do truly have more money if the government drops taxes. This is why the rich and corporations have waged war on taxes because they don't want to pay them. On February 6, 2009, Reed Hasting the CEO of a publicly traded company asked Obama to raise his taxes in an OP-ED piece in the N.Y. Times. In his article Hastings mention the fact that the government and media have attempted to minimize executive pay by shaming executives or limiting the amount of compensation and executive can receive. He says that neither of them work and that raising taxes would be more effective. Hastings then points out the fact that because other companies are paying such huge compensation every company feels obligated to do so also, to attract talent. He says that the solution is to raise everyone's taxes to prevent this phenomenon. He also states that this problem exists with hedge fund managing, professional athletes, movie stars and venture capitalist. I strongly agree with him. Taxes are a good thing. Taxes are what pays for things that we absolutely need such as courts, fire departments, infrastructure and police departments! Also, on the individual level if we get national health care it is worth having our taxes increased slightly because our health care system is broken. Our health care system sucks! It is not fair to have a CEO earns billions of dollars a year and deny people health insurance, coverage! I know that it is easy to hate taxes you look at your check, income or tax bill and you say man that is a lot of money but think what am I getting for this, ,schools, the FDA, streets, courts, police etc etc etc. Additionally when government is well run you mind less. When government sucks it hurts more to pay. Also taxes stabilize the economy because it keeps people from acquiring massive amounts of wealth and prevents massive speculation in markets. Our founding fathers fought against such accumulation of wealth because its is toxic to DEMOCRACY!!!!! It's easy to demagogue the issue because you don't like paying but stop for a moment and think.
