Question

Scam? Seems a bit fishy?

Found this on Craigslist. I had emailed him saying I was interested, but only gave him my name and phone number. This was the response. Common sense tells me a couple things: 1) The words Check Processing are in the duties list. 2) The address given is a condo for sale. 3) This is for a "lawyer" in CA, but I found the advertisement in FL. He talks of "meeting up"...how would that happen....are you going to fly down here for a person you are only paying $500 a week? 4) When you look up the name given (Law offices of NAME), there is nothing that comes up that matches. SO.....am I right? I haven't responded. Just seems odd. Here's the email....... Thanks for your interests in the PA position, I will deeply appreciate all genuine efforts to help me monitor and keep up to date with all my activities. I'm NAME,50years ,I serves the legal needs of small business in a variety of matters including general legal counsel, commercial litigation, contract disputes, civil litigation, small business litigation, and other legal matters.I place great importance on being accessible to my clients.I do this by working hard to be responsive, accommodating your schedule, and always keeping you informed about the progress of your case. I counsel my clients to confront legal challenges with aggressive, result oriented solutions.. I most very often get my hands occupied because am working with many companies both states and outside,so it is imperative for me to have a worthy assistant who can monitor and keep me up to date with my activities. As my assistant, your activities amongst other things will include: Make travel arrangements and submit expenses for Attorneys Order office supplies,Running personal errands,Check Processing Filing documents, faxing, printing and typing letters Web research, Internet search skills and posting ads Quality communication etiquette skills and good organizational skills Serious sense of humor required and mandatory to work with me Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information Perform duties with accuracy, quality, and integrity You can only apply for this position if you own a printer and personal computer. Basic wage is $500 a weekly This position is home-based and flexible you can be in any location, working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on. This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I do have a number of things you could help me with this week if you will be available for me. This can act as a stable foundation to our working relationship. Note:This position is home base office work you can be in any location and work with me from your home. Let me know your interest if you are ready to work with me from your home Mon-Fri @ 10am-1pm Hope to hear from you again. Yup, that's what I thought!

It does sound like a scam! Hi my name is Darrell I own my own detailing business in Kansas City, Missouri. I do alot of dealings with Craig's list and sometimes you have to be careful of scams and from what i've read, from that e-mail yes it sounds like a scam! so what ever you decide make sure you try to validate more of that info. Sounds like you have already tried with no success. Good Luck to you and i really hope you don't get ripped off. Sincerely, Darrell Warner

Yeah, that sounds very fishy. If he is a lawyer he has to be accredited. Ask him about those credentials. Then investigate them. Find out where they passed the bar. Here is a link to the Florida Bar. www ... Look for this guy in there. Find his contact information in there and then contact the guy directly. It could be very possible that they gave you the name of a real lawyer and that lawyer has no idea of what is going on. If you contact the lawyer thru the bar then you will probably be able to get to the real guy. All in all, I would never go to Craig's list to find a job. There are way too many scammers out there.

SCAM Alert!! It is written very poorly. English is obviously not this person's first language. My guess is that your first duty would be to deposit a check and forward the proceeds out of the country via Western Union or MoneyGram. Of course, the check is fake and you will be held responsible for it by your bank.

Yeah, it reads of BS and Scam. One, an assistant is LOCAL, not long distance. Two, assistants work in THEIR office, not at home. Even if some of the work can be done at home, you'd still have to go to their office to pick it up. Let's look at these supposed activities: "Make travel arrangements and submit expenses for Attorneys " Expense reports are done by the traveller and involve handling the receipts. Can't be done long distance. "Running personal errands" Exactly how is that home based. "Check Processing" Bingo--that's part of the scam. "Web research, Internet search skills and posting ads" Posting ads, possibly part of the scam. "I do have a number of things you could help me with this week" Scams rarely last long. Once the victim realizes they are being scammed they tend to stop handing money over. I'll bet the deal is here, cash these checks and pay the suppliers via western union. Then the checks bounce....

First things first. It does not seem fishy to me, but I would still be cautious, Look him up in the local state bar association. They are free of charge on the internet. Then draw up a basic agreement with him. Ask for a list of your various responsibilities in as much detail as possible. Make sure you have the appropriate phone numbers and email addresses, and street addresses, Do not send any money of course for the position. Make sure any and all correspondence you do for this firm has the firm's name on it. You do not use your credit card, email address, or banking information to do anything on your employer"s behalf. Other than these precautions-------- Go for it! Just be protective of you and your name at all times.

Everybody nailed it as a scam. Aside from the bogus details there is the language. I speak many so I can see this a mile away. I have always wondered why the scammers can not find at least one person who can speak English to the point to sound somewhat believable. Craigslist is scammer central. If you persist on looking for jobs via online you need to create another email account. No real name and don't provide your phone number. A legit company will understand the reasons why you chose to do so.
