Because they originally sold mostly old stuff that people had laying around and didn't want anymore. Old, used, dusty, bug infested stuff. Calling it a Flea Market was the best face they could put on that kind of merchandise.

Because the people who goes to them usually have fleas. Not exactly the cream of society go to flea markets!!!
